Walk this United States flight after sunset and the first thing you read is not the oak. It is a thin line of light under each nosing, repeating up the wall until it reaches the landing and turns. The walking face is white oak cladding. The outer edge is frameless glass held on slim black base fixings, with nothing capping the top of the panels.
By day the order reverses. Oak takes the foreground, each light line retreats into the shadow beneath its tread, and the glass simply keeps the edge open. One stair, two readings. Making both of them work is a drawing problem long before it becomes a finish problem.
This flight makes two arguments: cladding is an honest choice, and light belongs on the drawing set rather than the punch list.
After dark, the stair is the light
The lighting sits under the nosings, so it washes the tread below instead of shining back at anyone climbing. Because the risers are open, that wash carries through the gap and keeps going. A closed riser would have chopped the effect into separate rectangles, one per step, with a shadow band between them.
The glass edge matters here for a reason that has little to do with safety language. A frameless panel with no timber cap leaves the light nothing to hit on its way out. Put a handrail across the top and you introduce a horizontal shadow that competes with the horizontals you actually wanted.
Not one straight run
The climb reaches a landing and changes direction. That single fact drives most of the coordination on this package, because three separate rhythms have to arrive at the same corner and agree with each other.
Tread spacing on the second run has to answer to the first. Glass panels have to break somewhere sensible rather than wherever a standard sheet size happens to end. And the light line has to survive the turn, which is the variable a stair without integrated lighting never has to solve. Miss any one of the three and the corner reads as the seam between two different products.
“Clad” is the honest word
The project language for these treads is 贴皮 — white oak clad, or veneered, over a structural core. That is a normal factory path for a stair of this kind, and it is not the same statement as solid thick oak. This page keeps the accurate word rather than the flattering one.
Cladding earns its place when the tread has to do more than look like timber. A clad board can carry a core sized for span, a routed channel for the light, and a face that matches joinery elsewhere in the house. A single sawn plank rarely does all three equally well. Specify cladding when you want the oak face and the engineering underneath it. Ask for solid stock when the edge profile itself is the feature.
One piece of vocabulary is worth fixing here. Plenty of stairs sold as floating are mono-spine products with a steel beam down the middle. This flight is not one of those.
Three surfaces: underfoot, at the edge, out of sight

White oak cladding is what the foot lands on and what the camera sees. It also hosts the lighting. That makes each tread a small assembly rather than a plank: face, core, and a channel that has to exist before the oak closes over it.
At the edge
Frameless glass on black base fixings guards the open side. Frameless describes the absence of posts between panels; the hardware at the floor is still visible and still doing the work. Leaving the top of the glass bare was a decision, not an omission — a timber cap would have warmed the hand and cost the page its clean upper line.
Out of sight
The wall package is the only reason any of this reads as floating. Once paint closes, two common solutions look identical from the room. One uses individual anchors that take each tread back into prepared structure. The other hides a continuous stringer in a wall pocket, with arms reaching out under the boards. What separates both from a decorative beam is that neither asks to be admired. What they share is a dependency. The wall has to work as structure, and someone has to plan for that while it is still open.
Drawing the light before anyone pulls a wire
Integrated lighting is the part of this package people most often leave until late. It is also the part least able to survive that. The channel lives inside a clad tread. The feed has to reach that channel through the same wall that carries the stair. Both answers belong on paper, while the tread is still a drawing.
So the shop drawing for this stair answers more questions than a plain oak flight would. Where does each channel sit relative to the nosing. How does the run get power without a visible chase. What happens to the routing at the landing, where the geometry changes and the wall behind it changes with it. None of those are site decisions. A crew standing in a finished stairwell cannot invent an answer that looks deliberate.
The same drawing set also has to reconcile the glass with everything above. Base fixings land on a finished floor whose build-up moves as flooring and drywall go in. Drawing-first coordination is what keeps those three timelines — structure, light, glass — from discovering each other on the last week of the job.
What leaves the factory, what stays on site
The crates hold clad treads built to the approved geometry, the glass, the base hardware, and the drawings that say how the pieces relate. Export-ready crating means those items arrive labelled for the order a crew needs them in, rather than as a pile the crew has to sort in a stairwell.
The crates do not hold the wall. Structural preparation, the electrical connection behind the lighting, and the final fit all belong to the project's own contractor, working to local requirements. That division is worth stating plainly, because a video of a finished climb makes every stair look like it arrived in one piece.
Fingerprints, dust, and one circuit
An oak face picks up the history of the people using it. Glass records every hand that steadies itself on the way down. Open risers let dust settle on the horizontal faces where it shows. All of that is ordinary, and none of it is described here as maintenance-free.
The lighting adds something the other two do not: a circuit. Integrated tread lighting is a building service with a service life, and it sits inside joinery. Whoever plans the installation should also think about how a future repair reaches it. That question is much cheaper to answer on paper than behind a finished oak face.
What ends up in the house is a quiet package. White oak cladding, named accurately. A light line that reached the drawing set before it reached a wire. Frameless glass with no cap interrupting it. Structure that stays inside the wall, exactly where the drawings put it. The stair reads warm at midday and reads as a line of light at midnight, which was the point.
