Most project photos only show the victory lap. This Portland case keeps the rehearsal in frame. On one side of the composite, a bright contemporary living well — pale timber floor, white walls, a tall plant at the base, disc pendants dropping through the void — holds a dark, continuous curved stair. On the other, the identical flight stands on concrete among fans, crates, and cables, under-tread lights already glowing. The story is not “pretty stair, mysterious factory.” It is the same object before and after the house claimed it.
That pairing matters for anyone specifying a custom open-center curve. The finished room answers the lifestyle question: does the stair open the well, or choke it? Tread
Veined stone carries the footfall. In the finished well the boards look cool and quiet against light wood flooring; on the trial floor you see their mass clearly — how much stone the curved steel is asked to hold before any rug or sofa softens the scene. Grain softens the industrial dark of the stringer. Each tread has to land true so the under-tread light has a clean surface to wash, not a gap that leaks brightness sideways.
Stringer
Dark metal stringers form the spine of the arc. The outer face is the photograph from across the Portland living floor: a continuous charcoal band that turns with the stair and reads taller than a slim open stringer would. That height is intentional — it gives the climb a sheltered outer edge while still belonging to the stair object, not to a drywall return.
