    01 · Finished The curved flight reads as a continuous ribbon — travertine underfoot, dual-tone metal carrying the arc, glass keeping the edge open to Miami light.

    In this Miami residence, the stair is not tucked into a closed shaft. It sits in the open void between floors, where floor-to-ceiling glass already sets the tone: daylight, clear views, and an open plan that needs the stair to stay visually light. The answer is a custom open-center curved staircase — two stacked flights in the same material language — finished in travertine, dual-tone metal, and glass.

    A straight run would have been simpler. A center-pole spiral would have been smaller. Neither would have matched the room. Here the architecture gives the stair enough footprint for a generous walking line around the turn, so the flight can curve without a pole blocking the middle of the well. Guests move through daylight; the eye travels through open risers and glass panels to the outdoors.

    Why the curve fits this volume

    A curved stair makes sense when the room has room for it. In a tight core, a spiral around a newel is often the cleaner choice. In a tall glazed atrium, an open-center curve — a helical path without a center column — can follow the arc while keeping the view open. The stringers carry the load along the turn; the middle of the well stays empty on purpose.

    That choice changes how people move, not only how the stair photographs. A wide walking line around a continuous bend feels different from wedge treads spinning around a post. As you climb through the atrium, you see the rooms above, the underside of the next flight, and the daylight that drove a mostly glass facade. The stair reads as part of the room — not a closed corridor between floors.

    The stair had to do two jobs at once: read as a sculptural ribbon from the living level, and feel steady underfoot when you actually climb it.

    Two flights, one material language

    This home does not stop at a single rise. It needs two curved flights — one for the lower levels, one continuing above. Stacked curves are unforgiving. If the upper flight drifts in radius, glass break points, or stringer finish, you see the mismatch from the ground floor. Both flights were coordinated as one system: the same travertine, the same dual-tone stringer finish, the same glass logic.

    In plan, each flight follows a continuous arc. In elevation, open risers keep the mass light. A solid travertine starter block grounds the lower flight where it meets the floor; above that block, thick stone treads seat on the curved steel. The dual-tone stringer — a bronze outer face with a lighter inner soffit — lets the dark ribbon read against white structure while the underside stays bright when you look up.

    Geometry locked before steel is cut

    A curve cannot be improvised from a mood board. Before fabrication, the shop drawing has to lock three things that travel together: the radius that fits each floor opening, the walking line around the turn, and where the curved glass breaks into segments so the balustrade can follow the stringer without fighting it. Miss one, and tread noses drift, handrail joints look random, or glass panels refuse the bend the steel has already taken.

    Segmented glass is the practical answer at residential scale. A single continuous sheet rarely suits a long arc; careful breaks — placed where the drawing schedules them — still read as one line when the joints stay quiet. Metal stringers are formed in segments too, joined so the outer bronze face stays continuous and the lighter inner face does not show every weld as a color break. What looks effortless in a finished photo usually started on paper, then was proven in metal and stone.

    Because two flights share one language, the drawing is also a sequencing document. Pieces are labeled so the local installation team can set the lower and upper flights in the order they were built. Fabrication ends at a coordinated shipment; fitting on site is handled by the project’s local contractor. That boundary keeps responsibility clear and keeps workshop focus on what can be controlled: geometry, finish, and fit between parts.

    Materials that carry the idea

    Tread

    Travertine is the walking surface. Its horizontal grain softens the industrial clarity of the steel; thick treads give the open-riser flight a sense of weight without closing the view. A matching starter block at the base acts like a small landing stone — it announces the climb and keeps the first metal geometry from looking thin where it meets the floor. Each tread has to seat true on the curved stringer so the nose line stays even as the flight rises.

    Stringer

    Dual-tone metal stringers are the structural spine of the arc — the inner and outer faces of the same curved member, finished differently on purpose. The bronze outer face is what you photograph from across the room; the lighter inner soffit is what you see standing under the flight. Keeping those two finishes consistent across both stacked flights matters as much as getting the radius right. Color drift between upper and lower stringers would read immediately in a glass atrium.

    Balustrade

    Curved glass balustrade with a slim metal handrail keeps the perimeter open. In Miami light, glass keeps the stair from reading as a dark mass against the windows. The handrail stays quiet: a thin profile that finishes the glass edge without competing with the bronze stringer below. Together, stone, dual-tone steel, and glass stay open and luminous — a custom curve, not a kit spiral.

    Living with the finished stair

    Once the rooms are finished, the stair has to work in two ways. From the living level, it is a sculptural object against white structure and dark window frames. From the landings above, it is a path — people notice whether the walking line feels steady and whether glass joints interrupt the hand. A good curved staircase does both without calling attention to the trade-offs. You see travertine and light; you do not see every segmented decision that made the curve buildable.

    Daily use is part of the brief. Glass needs regular cleaning in a bright atrium. Stone needs honest care at the nosing where traffic concentrates. That is not a flaw — it is the cost of keeping the stair open to Miami light. The install photograph shows the usual order for serious custom work: steel and geometry first, stone and glass second, site fitting last under local supervision.

    Notes for a similar curved stair

    If you are planning a curved staircase for a glazed atrium, begin with the opening, not the finish board. Confirm that the plan can hold the radius without pinching the walking line. Decide early whether you need one flight or a stacked pair — a second curve multiplies every coordination decision. Choose tread material with the stringer finish in mind: travertine against bronze is a different conversation from timber against painted steel. Treat the glass balustrade as part of the same drawing as the stringer, not as a railing package added later.

    This Miami project follows that order: an open-center custom curved staircase in travertine and dual-tone metal, two flights sharing one language, glass kept clear so daylight stays the point. It photographs as a design feature and walks as a carefully drawn path between floors — which is what a curved stair should do.
