In this Charleston residence, the stairwell does more than connect floors. One black square-tube spine carries open wood treads through a bright hall. Two different edge languages share the same well: a floor-to-ceiling vertical square-tube screen on one side, and clear glass with a slim black top rail on the open side.
Under each nosing, a thin line of light softens the climb after dark. By day the wood and the black tube take the foreground. The point of the project is coordination — stair structure and railing systems drawn together — not a floating trick that hides every support. If the photograph still shows the spine, the design told the truth.
The well needed one spine and two honest edges: a vertical screen for privacy and rhythm, glass where the view should stay open, and light under the treads when the house goes quiet.
One well, two edge languages

Most stair photos sell a single balustrade idea. This well refuses that simplification. On the open side, large glass panels keep sightlines clear into the hall. On the inner side, a dense field of vertical black square tubes reads as architecture first and guard second — a screen you walk beside, not a thin rail you barely notice.
That dual language only works when both edges share one metal family and one finish. The black top rail on the glass, the black tube spine, and the black screen bars speak the same dialect against light wood floors and white panelled walls. Miss the finish match and the well looks like two different contracts fighting in one photograph.
A black square tube that stays in the frame

Call the structure by its right name. A visible black square-tube mono-stringer runs under the open treads — a closed box section, powder-coated dark, meant to be read as a clean diagonal through the room. This is not a floating stair that erases the load path, and it is not a white tube vanishing into plaster.
Short arms hold each wood tread off the spine so the open risers stay airy. From a low angle you see the tube, the tread rhythm, the glass edge, and the warm wash under each nosing at once. The photograph should still make sense when you stand at the bottom and look for the support — because the support is supposed to be there.
The screen that climbs with the house

The vertical screen is the project’s sharpest spatial move. It climbs from landing toward the upper volume as a continuous field of black bars, giving privacy and a measured rhythm without closing the well into a solid wall. Through the gaps you still catch light and movement; from the side the screen reads as a deliberate plane.
On the landing, glass and screen meet in plan so the handrail line can turn without changing metal language. That junction is where dual-system stairs usually fail — one edge drifts in height, finish, or glass break. Here the stills show the meeting as quiet hardware and aligned black lines.
Light under the nosings — not the whole story

After dark, a soft line under each tread washes the step below and keeps the open risers from reading as a hard shadow stack. The light is a character of the finished stair — not a punch-list strip added when the furniture arrives. We do not invent driver brands, color temperatures, or wattage; the photos show a warm under-tread glow coordinated with the wood and the black metal.
By day that glow retreats. What remains is the dual-edge story: screen and glass, tube and tread. If you only remember the night light, you miss why this Charleston well is different from a mono tube with a single glass guard.
Stair and rail drawn as one set
A package like this fails when the stair drawing and the railing drawing never meet. Before fabrication, the set has to lock tube line, tread spacing, screen bay rhythm, glass breaks, handrail heights, and where the under-tread light path runs so site wiring is not improvising against finished wood.
We lock shop drawings first, then fabricate the steel and wood package and pack it for export-ready crating. On-site fitting — including final glass set and electrical tie-in — belongs to the project’s local crew. The factory owns geometry, finish, and fit between parts; the house owns the wall openings and the live circuits.
What stays calm in daily use

Day to day, glass wants ordinary cleaning; wood nosings want grit kept off the edge; black powder coat wants a soft cloth more than a hard scrub. The vertical screen collects less fingerprints than a full glass wall on that side, which is part of why the dual language feels practical, not only photogenic.
Charleston light is bright in these stills — white walls, pale floors, a dark door as a quiet accent. Soft place, no heritage costume. The stair’s job is to stay modern and calm inside that brightness while the screen and glass do different work on opposite edges. Keep both languages honest, and the well reads as one coordinated Charleston package rather than a pile of parts.
